Rail milling represents a modern advancement in rail surface restoration by removing rail surface defects such as RCF and corrugation; while at the same time restoring the transverse track profile to 100%. Unlike rail grinding, this is all achieved in one pass with no grind dust to cleanup and any possibility of tie or right of way fires during the operation is virtually eliminated.
In 2019, Rhomberg Sersa became the first contractor to introduce rail milling technology to North America. With over 450 successful shifts completed, our experienced and highly trained operators continue to deliver the industry’s best results using these advanced, high-precision machines.
Key Features
- Comprehensive Rail Surface Restoration - Removes both transverse and longitudinal defects, ensuring full railhead recovery and optimal running surface.
- Clean, Safe Operation - Produces minimal sparks and zero dust emissions, eliminating environmental and fire risks.
- Enhanced Ride Quality - Restores smooth rail profiles that reduce wear, noise, and vibration for a quieter, more comfortable ride.
- Versatile Application - Efficiently processes plain track and turnouts (switches) with the same high level of precision.
- Integrated Measurement Systems - Captures transverse and longitudinal profiles and performs eddy current (surface crack) inspections in real time.
- High Endurance Design - Operates for extended periods without refueling or emptying the chip bunker, maximizing productivity.
- Compact, Low-Bed Construction - Purpose-built for tight clearance environments, such as tunnels and urban transit systems.
- Gauge Convertible – Adaptable to multiple track gauges, providing flexibility across rail networks.
